Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about using this free online black-scholes + greeks.

What do the Black-Scholes Greeks represent? ▾
Delta measures sensitivity to underlying price changes; Gamma measures Delta's rate of change; Vega measures sensitivity to a 1% change in volatility; Theta measures one-day time decay; and Rho measures sensitivity to interest rate changes.
Can Black-Scholes be used for American style options? ▾
The classic Black-Scholes formula strictly prices European-style options (exercise only at expiry). For non-dividend paying stocks, European call prices equal American call prices, but American puts and dividend-paying equities may require binomial tree models.
How is standard normal cumulative distribution N(d1) computed here? ▾
We implement high-precision polynomial approximations (Abramowitz & Stegun / Hart algorithms) directly in client-side JavaScript to guarantee 7+ decimal places of Greek precision.
Why does Vega peak at-the-money (ATM)? ▾
At-the-money options carry the greatest uncertainty regarding whether they will expire in or out of the money. Therefore, an increase or decrease in implied volatility has the largest impact on ATM options compared to deep ITM or deep OTM options.
