How to Use the Online Hash Generator

1 Enter Input String

Type or paste the plain text, token, or password you want to hash into the input area.

2 Select Output Case

Choose between lowercase (standard in Unix/Linux) or uppercase hexadecimal formatting.

3 Inspect Cryptographic Hashes

The generator computes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 hashes in real-time as you type.

4 Copy Desired Digest

Click the "Copy" button next to any specific algorithm digest for instant use in databases or verification scripts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about using this free online hash generator.

Can a cryptographic hash like SHA-256 be decrypted or reversed? ▾
No. Cryptographic hash functions are strictly one-way mathematical algorithms. They map arbitrary-length data into a fixed-length fingerprint; you cannot mathematically reverse a hash back to its original plaintext.
Why is MD5 and SHA-1 deprecated for password storage? ▾
Both MD5 and SHA-1 have known collision vulnerabilities where two distinct inputs can yield the identical hash. For secure passwords, modern salt-based key derivation functions like Bcrypt, Argon2, or PBKDF2 must be used.
What is the bit length of each hash output? ▾
MD5 is 128 bits (32 hex characters); SHA-1 is 160 bits (40 hex characters); SHA-256 is 256 bits (64 hex characters); and SHA-512 is 512 bits (128 hex characters).
Is hashing performed on the server or in my browser? ▾
All computations use the native client-side Web Cryptography API (`crypto.subtle.digest`) in your browser. Sensitive strings and passwords are never transmitted over the internet.
